History of the water industry

Water industry is largely comprised of waterworks and sewage, both of which manufacture and treat water that we use in everyday life.

- Enactment of the Water Supply and Waterworks Installation Act (Law No. 939)
- Korea’s first water-related act, comprehensive plan related to waterworks

- AID loan agreement related to the new water filtration plant in Bogwang-dong, Daegu
1966
- Revision of the Water Supply and Waterworks Installation Act (Law No. 1824)
  - Secure evidence to found the waterworks association / Enactment and proclamation of the Korea Water Resources Corporation Act
1967
- Founded the Korea Water Resources Corporation Act (Currently K-water)
1969
- Waterworks to be managed by public corporations in the local community

- Launch of the Environmental Pollution Prevention Group / Enactment of the “Environmental Management Corproation Act”
  (Environmental Pollution Prevention Group changed to the Environmental Management Corproation)
1989
- Hwamyeong water purification plant opens Korea’s first ozonization facility, a water treatment facility
- Busan and Daegu launch and organize the Waterworks Headquarters
- Built a comprehensive plan to supply clean water with the tap water pollution incident

- Environment Office promoted to Ministry of Environment
1991
- Seoul water supply rate reaches 99.9%.
1994
- Announcement of measures to improve the water quality in Nakdong River
  (All purification plants in Nakdong River to have a high-class treatment facility)
- Ministry of Environment takes the responsibility of managing water quality for waterworks and sewage
1998
- Start of the special comprehensive plan to manage water quality from the Han River water source
1999
- Started to collect fees for using water

- Completion of the Seongsan Human Excreta Treatment Plant (Korea’s first excreta treatment plant)

- Ministry of Environment announces the first year of sewer management and maintenance, and builds the “Comprehensive Plan for Sewer Management and Maintenance”
2006
- Implementation of the Water Environment Management Basic Plans
2007
- Building of the “Small Village Sewage Maintenance Plan” by transfering the responsibilities of managing sewages at agricultural and fisheries village to the Ministry of Environment
- Ministry of Environment buids the “National Comprehensive Sewage Plan”
2008
- Ministry of Environment, completion of the urban nonpoint pollution materials undercurrent and treatment system, completion and announcement of the standard blueprint for sewage manholes
2010
- Enactment of the “Specification Standards for Sewer Construction” and “Promotion of and Support for Water Reuse Act”
2011
- Ministry of Environment builds the “2050 Sewage Policy Vision”
2012
- Complete ban of releasing sewage sludge to the oceans

Waterworks of the future

We will continue to develop advanced techniques related to waterworks including smart observation, Big-Data, real-time leak detection, and more, for a sustainable supply of safe and clean water.
