The Arteries of the City

In a space symbolizing urban management facilities,
we introduce various technologies of the smart water distribution network that,
through modernization efforts, prevent contamination and leakage, ensuring convenient and efficient water usage.

1.Modernization of the Water Distribution Network

- The history of Korea's water supply system dates back over 100 years, beginning with the construction of the Ttukdo Water Treatment Plant in 1908, which supplied 12,500㎥ of tap water daily to the areas inside Seoul's four main gates and around Yongsan.
- The widespread implementation of modern water supply systems began in the 1960s, and through intensive installation of infrastructure, Korea quickly achieved a supply rate on par with advanced countries.
- Despite its 100-year history, 31.4% of the country's water pipes and 58.8% of water treatment plants are over 20 years old, leading to a significant decline in their functionality.

Problems with Aging Water Pipes

① Impact on Residents' Lives and Safety
☞ Damage caused by water outages, risks of ground subsidence, and flooding.
② Wasting Budget and Exacerbating Water Shortages During Droughts
☞ Water lost due to leaks in old water pipes amounts to the equivalent of three times the volume of the Paldang Reservoir (6.9 tons of water are lost annually due to leaks in the water distribution system)
③ Decreased Trust in Tap Water
☞ Rusty water, odors, and other issues caused by aging pipes diminish public trust in tap water.

How Was Modernization Achieved?

① Investigating and repairing old water pipes to reduce leaks and prevent contamination within the water distribution system.
② Establishing a block system for each water supply zone to create a systematic network management system.
③ Rebuilding outdated water treatment facilities with the latest water purification processes.
④ Implementing smart management using ICT technologies.

2. Key Technologies in the Water Distribution Network

- Pressure Management : Lowering water pressure makes tap water use more convenient and reduces leakage (higher pressure leads to more water loss).
- Leakage Management : Actively detecting leaks, quickly repairing them, and replacing old, damaged pipes help reduce financial losses caused by leaks.
- Block System : Organizing and dividing the complex and disorganized network into manageable blocks, then managing water usage, pressure, and quality for each zone.
- Smart Water Distribution Network Maintenance System : Using ICT technologies to efficiently and continuously maintain the water distribution network in a smart and sustainable way.

from the water source to the tap, in real time.

1.Smart Water Management Experience

- Monitor the smart water management system, which oversees the entire urban water supply process in real time, from the water source to the tap. Using a tablet, experience how the system predicts and resolves crisis situations such as water outages through Smart Water Management (SWM).
